A blank fence is a big canvas, and it's one of the easiest places to add character to a garden or courtyard. Fence art is some of my most popular work for exactly that reason. Here are ten ideas that work well on New Zealand fences, and the finishes that last out there.
On a long fence, a single big piece almost always looks better than a scatter of small ones. A large corten or black steel design becomes a focal point and draws the eye down the garden.
Three matching pieces spaced evenly along a fence create rhythm and make a boundary feel considered. Birds in flight or a set of botanicals work beautifully this way.
Tūī, fantail, karerū and kōtare silhouettes feel right at home on a Kiwi fence, especially near planting where they look like they've just landed.
Corten's warm rust sits beautifully against timber, greenery and stone, so it's a favourite for garden fences. It weathers into its colour over a few months and needs no upkeep after that.
Flowing koru, ferns and flowers soften a hard fence line and connect it to the garden. They suit both modern and traditional homes.
A slim vertical piece is perfect for the tight sections of fence beside a gate or between windows where nothing else fits.
A pool fence is a great spot for a feature. Choose marine-grade stainless or powder-coated finishes so the piece copes with splashes, chlorine and sun.
Position a piece so plants grow up around it over time. Grasses and climbers weaving through steel art is one of the nicest looks in a garden.
An uplight or a spotlight on a fence piece gives you a completely different look after dark, with the shape throwing a shadow on the fence behind it.
Combine a piece of fence art with something useful nearby, like a set of outdoor hooks or a house number on a stake, so the whole boundary feels intentional.
Fences cop full weather, so finish matters. Powder-coated steel and aluminium suit most fences, corten is lovely in a garden setting, and marine-grade 316 stainless is best right on the coast. All of mine are made to handle NZ conditions.

My pieces have pre-cut holes to screw on. Use screws suited to your fence material, whether timber, aluminium or block. I don't supply the screws, and my installation guide covers each.
