Letterbox numbers are the hardest-working numbers on your property. They're what the courier reads at speed, what visitors look for at night, and what emergency services need to find in a hurry. They also live in the toughest spot on the section, out at the kerb, copping sun, rain and the odd knock with nothing sheltering them.
Here's how to choose letterbox numbers that stay readable and stay put, New Zealand conditions included.
The test for letterbox numbers is simple: can someone read them from a slowing car? BThat means bigger than you think, since small numbers disappear at distance, especially at dusk. Strong contrast does the rest, whether that's dark numbers on a light letterbox or light on dark. If your letterbox sits side-on to the road, consider numbers on both faces so you're readable from either direction.
The kerb is harsher than the house. Letterbox numbers take direct weather from every angle, plus the occasional bump from bikes, bins and enthusiastic parking. Steel handles all of it. My numbers and letters are made from premium NZ steel or aluminium and finished for exactly this job, in architectural powder coat for crisp black, white and colours, or corten for a warm rust patina that only improves outdoors. There's no laminate to lift and no plastic to yellow. My complete house numbers guide covers the finishes in more detail.
The sharpest street appeal comes from consistency, with letterbox numbers that match the numbers on the house in the same style and finish. It reads as considered rather than collected over time. If you're updating both, choose the house numbers first, since the larger canvas sets the style, then carry it down to the letterbox. For what's current, my modern house numbers trends guide is a good place to start.
Metal numbers fix cleanly to timber, brick, concrete and most powder-coated letterboxes. Use stainless fixings outside so nothing streaks, and for rural boxes and unusual shapes a small mounting plate can bridge curves or corrugations. If you're not sure what will work on your letterbox, send me a photo as am happy to offer an opinion.
Every number and letter is made to order in my Auckland, from the same steel and finishes I've used on more than 50,000 pieces since 2007. Choose your size, style and finish, and your letterbox is sorted for the next decade, not the next season.

Big enough to read from a slowing car. Measure the distance from the road and size up if you're unsure, since small numbers disappear at dusk.
Steel or aluminum. Powder-coated metal gives crisp colour that won't fade, and corten weathers into a warm rust that suits the outdoors. Both handle full weather at the kerb far better than plastic or laminate.
They fix straight onto timber, brick, concrete or a powder-coated letterbox with the right screws. Use stainless fixings so nothing streaks, and for curved or corrugated boxes a small mounting plate helps.
Ideally, yes. Matching the style and finish looks considered and ties the street frontage together. Choose the house numbers first, then carry the look down to the letterbox.
Every one, made to order in Auckland from quality NZ steel or aluminium.
