A hook wall is one of my favourite ideas: a group of hooks arranged as a feature, so a bare wall becomes something that's both a bit of art and genuinely useful. It works in an entryway, a hallway, a mudroom, a kids' room or by the back door. Here's how to plan one.
Instead of one lonely hook, you run several across a wall in a considered layout. The hooks themselves become the feature, and the wall earns its keep by holding coats, bags, hats, keys, leads and towels. Done well, it looks deliberate rather than cluttered.
Entryways and hallways are the classic spot, catching everything as people come and go. Mudrooms and laundries, kids' rooms and bedrooms, the back door, and even a bathroom for robes and towels all suit one. Anywhere the family drops things is a good candidate.
A few simple rules make it look right. Decide whether you want a neat straight row or a relaxed staggered arrangement. Keep even spacing between hooks, and mount them at a height that suits who's using them, lower for kids and higher for coats. Measure the wall and mark the positions before you drill so it stays balanced.
You don't have to use identical hooks. Mixing a couple of sculptural designs with plain ones, or adding a small piece of wall art alongside, gives the wall personality. Sticking to one finish, like all black or all corten, keeps it cohesive.
For a busy entry or anything near the outdoors, steel hooks in a powder-coated or stainless finish stand up to daily use and damp coats. All of mine are cut and finished here to handle it.
