The koru is one of my most-loved designs, and it's easy to see why. That simple unfurling spiral carries real meaning, and it looks beautiful on a wall. Here's a little about the koru and how to choose a piece for your home.
The koru is the unfurling frond of the silver fern, and in Māori culture it symbolises new beginnings, growth, harmony and new life. That's why it's such a meaningful choice for a new home, a new chapter, a graduation, a birth, or a gift that's meant to mark something.
My koru designs are cut from steel in clean, minimalist forms that suit both modern and traditional homes. Some are simple wall pieces, and some hang from natural rope for a softer, textural look. In black they're crisp and architectural, in corten they bring a warm natural rust, and in colour they lift a space.
A koru suits almost anywhere: above a bed or sofa, in an entryway to greet people, or outdoors on a fence or courtyard wall. Because the shape is calm and balanced, it's an easy one to place, and it pairs beautifully with timber, greenery and other native designs.
Every koru piece is finished to be weatherproof, so it works just as well outside on a fence or patio as it does on an indoor wall. A corten koru in the garden, with plants growing up around it, is one of my favourite looks.
