Unlike a wall piece, a sculpture stands in the garden itself, in a bed, on the lawn, at the end of a path or as the centrepiece of a courtyard. It gives the garden a sense of height and permanence, and something to look at when the planting is between seasons.
Think about the view. A sculpture works best where the eye naturally lands: at the end of a path, framed by an opening in the planting, against a hedge or wall that sets it off, or where you see it from a window or the deck. Give it a bit of space so it reads as a feature rather than getting lost in the greenery.
Corten is the classic choice for garden sculpture. Its warm rust looks made for a garden, changes gently over time, and needs no upkeep once it's weathered. For colour, powder-coated steel lasts and pops against green, and marine-grade stainless suits coastal gardens.
Some of my sculptures push straight into the soil on a stake, so you can position and reposition them as the garden grows. Larger standing pieces are made to hold their spot as a permanent focal point.
Bigger reads better outdoors than most people expect, because the open sky and planting swallow scale. If you're between sizes for an open lawn or a large bed, go up.
